Webinar on marine plastic pollution in the Baltic Sea and Mediterranean

Date: Wed, 24 June @ 14:30 Start

Addressing marine plastic pollution in Europe’s seas remains a persistent governance challenge. A substantial political hierarchy spanning local, national and regional levels means there is no clear role for a single actor to implement EU policies on clean and healthy oceans. Multiple stakeholders from different sectors and agencies are expected to work together. While there are signs of collaboration between governments, NGOs, fishers, farmers and product manufacturers, many such initiatives are limited in scope or informal, which means the potential for greater collaboration remains untapped.

This webinar will examine persistent challenges as well as innovative solutions to better governance of marine plastics in the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. The two cases, implemented as part of the PERMAGOV project, focus on different plastic types: the abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) in the Baltic Sea, and agri-plastics in the Mediterranean. Despite these differences, the cases face the same cross-cutting issues that impede effective mitigation: low levels of trust between some actors, divergent views and the scope and impact of pollution, competing discourses on who should ultimately bear the main responsibility for the reduction effort.

Speakers from leading universities, research institutes and regional policy bodies will present case study results, reflect on innovative governance models (e.g. source-to-sea), discuss shared lessons and possible next steps to reduce marine plastic pollution in Europe.
